Melissa co-owned and operated the shop for five years, managing memberships, classes, equipment, and daily operations, while Angie worked as an instructor and shop monitor. Together, they bring over 15 years of combined experience teaching printmaking to thousands of participants across Detroit and Southeast Michigan. Through this work, they hear the same need again and again: people want to keep making after a class ends but lack affordable access to equipment, workspace, and an ongoing creative community. All earned income to date has been reinvested into equipment, supplies, and startup costs rather than founder compensation. CopyCat is currently operating without a dedicated physical space, offering programming in temporary locations while working toward securing a permanent studio. Unlike commercial print shops that “print for you,” we teach people how to produce their own work, building long-term skills, confidence, and self-sufficiency. Our shared studio brings screen printing, relief printing, and letterpress together under one roof, lowering barriers to experimentation and cross-disciplinary learning. Through affordable memberships, open studio access, and recurring workshops, artists can return regularly and sustain their practice. Inclusion is central to our approach.
